“When you have something to do, life will not allow you to move forward until you do it.” -Iyanla Vanzant
We all have big dreams for our lives. We all have big ideas on what we’d like our life to look like and how we imagine our future should be.
Some of us carefully plan our lives and follow through step by step. Some of us daydream and plan about the things we need to do to get us to that place in life that we feel will make us very happy.
But there is a problem. The problem is a lot of us are having difficulties with achieving those goals we’ve set before us. Most of us don’t even know how to go about achieving our goals. Time kind of flies, and before we know it, we end up looking back and wondering how we missed it.
There is something we are all guilty of from time to time, and that includes me. We never really get started on the things we’ve always wanted to do.
Sometimes, when I randomly pick up a jotter from our bookshelf, I often find a couple of ideas and things I wanted to try. Unfortunately, I never get to try them and the jotter eventually gets abandoned for one reason or another.
The funny thing is that I never even remembered some of the ideas until I found them again in the jotter. The excitement with which I wrote them down was gone and it left me wondering how far I would have gone if I had started then.
We all know that not everything we get going will end up being our calling in life. The thing is, we will never know if we never even try.
Some people, like me, need to try their hands on a couple of things before finally finding that one hit. So many people find it hard to know from day one, exactly what they should be doing in this world. That is why it is important to get started.
Without getting started, we will never move forward. We will feel stuck in one place forever. This life is made up of decisions and actions, which complement each other. These two are very important for our success and self-growth.
Making a decision and not backing it up with action, will leave us feeling stuck in one place our entire lives.
If you keep making decisions but not following them up with the necessary action, sorry but not much will happen. Being stuck in one place is torture and this is a nightmare we all must wake up from.
Where we are right now is a reflection of the choices we made in the past, good or bad. Some people are happy with where they are now while some are not really impressed with their current situation. For those who happy with where they are, congratulations. It means you probably made some good choices in the past and you should be very proud of yourself.
If you are not happy with your current life, it’s either life brought some circumstances beyond your control or you never really pursued anything. Maybe just like lots of people, you never really got started. This may be due to fear of change or unclarity about how to go about it.
The Good and the Bad News
Let’s start with the bad news. The bad news is that you have wasted precious time, energy and probably, resources on things that didn’t really take you towards your goals. You also might have developed some bad habits in your lifestyle, relationships, career and other areas, which keep you from stepping forward.
The good news is, the best time to have started something was yesterday, the next best time is now. Yes, you have now to start. It’s never too late. You have the ability to change everything, but it requires you to take steps. It requires you to embrace change and plunge ahead despite the fear you feel.
Embrace Change and Get Started
The only way to get started is to get started. Don’t be afraid to start small and don’t be afraid to take baby steps if that’s what it’ll take. Rome was not built in a day. Hardly anything was built in a day. The house you live in, was it built in a day? What about the food you eat? They didn’t grow in a day either. You were not built in a day. It took 9 months for you to become a full term baby.
Things take time to build. Progress takes time. Taking the first step will help us start getting clear about what we want to do and before we know it, things beginning to flow.
Sometimes, you have to step out of your comfort zone and try new things. I like that part of the movie ‘Queen of Katwe’, where Katende said; “Sometimes, the place you are used to is not the place you belong.” So many people die with their potential because they were afraid to leave that which feels comfortable and commit to change.
We are afraid of uncertainty. We don’t want to step into the unknown. The path that is often taken by others is what feels comfortable and safe, so we tend to stick with the status quo.
You’ve had lots of ideas, but you never really tried any and now, you feel stuck in the same place. Does this sound familiar? Well, it does to me.
It took time before I actually started taking action towards my goals. For a long time, I kept giving excuses. I wanted to start blogging for a long time before I finally took action. At one point, I started and then I relaxed a bit.
Now that I’m on it again, I sometimes wonder how far I would have gone if I hadn’t delayed or stopped. But the good part is that I took action. No matter how little my steps are, there’s still progress.
Remember, life rewards those who are committed to taking measurable and consistent action on a daily basis. Your small steps and little actions equal great results. You can step out, take little actions and you’ll still see positive results. The point is, little actions really count.
Overcoming Overwhelm and Putting It All Together
So many people are victims of overwhelm. We all have an idea or a picture of what we’d like to accomplish and where we’d like to be, but the paralyzing nature of fear and the discomforting idea of change has prevented us from taking action at some point.
Understanding that we don’t have to have it all together to start, is key. We don’t have to have it all or know it all to get started. The beauty of life is that with each step taken, the next becomes clearer.
It becomes even clearer and easier with these;
- A decision within to change (Inspiration)
- A reason to take the steps we need to take (Motivation)
- Understanding that small steps are perfectly normal and okay (AHA!)
- Actually taking steps (Action)
- A dose of persistence, commitment, and patience.
Taking one step at a time will help in overcoming overwhelm. It will also help us to know that since we conquered the first step, we can conquer the next. It builds confidence and reduces fear. It makes change a little less scary.
Nothing can stop you from making power moves. Nothing can stop you from creating that life that you want. You aren’t really stuck.
