I love to watch the news but at the same time, I don’t like it that much. What I love to watch is the positive part, the inspiring content. I get hyped with positive vibes when I see great people doing great things all over the world.

On the other hand, my entire day practically gets messed up whenever I see all the bad things that keep happening all around the world.

Most of the time, I avoid the news, except they are showing something uplifting. Even while going through social media, as soon as I sense any post or video is likely going to disturb my peace, I quickly scroll past it. Any caption that reads “viewer discretion” is definitely not for me.

I remember watching a particular video about a nanny in Uganda beating up a little girl. I was emotionally messed up for months. Seriously. Another video that got me all cold and hurt for a very long time, was the one where some natives of a certain village in Ghana, stoned a soldier to death. In cold blood. For no reason.

Since then, I DO NOT make the mistake of watching anything close to those. I watch only things that make me happy, energized and motivated, or things that make me laugh and learn.

BUT, this is the thing. Just because I avoid watching the bad stuff that happens in life doesn’t mean that they don’t happen. It doesn’t mean bad things don’t exist anymore and it doesn’t stop them from happening every day. I know that there are people who go through unimaginable experiences every day.

People are suffering. It’s sad but true. There are millions or even billions of people who right now, are in pains, bondage, hunger, depression, and so many other crises.

Is there something you are going through right now? It’s without a doubt that each one of us has days when things go wrong. We all have days when we cry in solitude and days when we feel like jumping into the deep blue sea.

There are certain situations we can change and there are some we cannot. But, one thing I know for a fact is, gratitude makes things better. It makes situations easier to handle and burdens lighter to bear. Gratitude is a lifesaver more than you can think. In most situations, gratitude is enough. It could even turn the whole situation around.

Truly, I believe you have a lot to be thankful for. If you hear what someone else is going through at this very moment, you’d be shocked and probably filled with tears. Just last week, there were over 100 people on a plane in Cuba, that was about to crash. There was nothing they could do. The plane crashed and they lost their lives.

Last week also, there were people who lost their entire homes to lava from the volcanic eruption in Hawaii. There are slaves somewhere in bondage. There are hungry and homeless people on the streets. Some people are sick and cannot even move.

Do you still doubt that you have a lot to be grateful for? Apart from having reasons to be grateful, gratitude has a lot of benefits. At the end of the day, you do yourself good by having an attitude of gratitude.

11 Ways Gratitude Makes Your Life Better:

  1. Gratitude makes you happier. When you express deep gratitude, you realize that you become a happier person because you tend to complain/sulk less. Complaining magnifies problems but gratitude makes them look smaller. The smaller your problem looks the happier you become, and it makes you feel good.
  2. Gratitude helps your emotions to get strengthened. You feel strengthened emotionally because you don’t feel bad all the time and it helps you quickly pick positive vibes. It also helps you quickly bounce back whenever things go wrong.
  3. Gratitude gives you a helping spirit. When you are thankful for what you have, you’ll find out that it’s enough to share. You realize other people face worse than you and you find yourself wanting to help them.
  4. Gratitude makes you more optimistic. It can be directly linked with optimism. When you see things positively, you’ll always find something good in every bad situation and you see that you have enough to be thankful for.
  5. Gratitude helps you to be less self-centered. You stop expecting everyone to drop whatever they are doing and attend to your problems and you tend to think more of the those who are not as privileged as you are.
  6. Gratitude gives you peace. Whenever you are faced with challenges and you find what to be grateful for in such moments, there’s this gush of peace you feel in your heart. You have this peaceful countenance that makes people around you wonder.
  7. Gratitude makes you friendlier. It reduces bitterness and resentment. It makes you realize that no one is obligated to solve your problems and you are a lot friendlier, especially if you are grateful for the people in your life. If they help you out, fine, if they don’t, you won’t be upset with them.
  8. Gratitude makes you healthier. It helps you sleep better, increases your energy levels, keeps you away from the doctor (sometimes), and helps you live longer. Basically, you tend to think less about your problems.
  9. Gratitude reduces materialism. There is actually nothing wrong with wanting more. But, with gratitude, you get to enjoy what you have now, while you work towards what you want in the future. You appreciate what you have and believe that you don’t need to have it all to be happy.
  10. Gratitude gets rid of envy. This is pretty straightforward. If you are grateful for what you have, you’ll have no need being envious of what other people have.
  11. Gratitude strengthens your faith. It makes you closer to God and it makes you appreciate Him more because ultimately, all gratitude goes to Him. A grateful heart always believes all is well with him/her.

Whenever you are tempted to complain about stuff,  quickly replace that thought with gratitude and you will see how astonishing it could be. When things go wrong and you don’t know what to do, try gratitude. Whenever you feel overwhelmed, try gratitude. I have tried it so many times and I know for sure it works.

It’s not happiness that brings us gratitude, it’s gratitude that brings us happiness.

At the end of the day, you have a lot to be thankful for. If you are grateful for where you are now and what you have, you will begin to see it as enough. You’d find out that you actually have enough to share. Gratitude helps you look at your life with content and pushes you to help others because you believe your situation is not even half as bad as theirs.

For if we keep complaining about how bad things are for us, how can we help those who face worse? You can be part of the solution to the bad that happens if you learn to be grateful for your present state and be determined to help those who face worse. Someone said, if you have a dollar, you have plenty to share. Be grateful for that dollar because someone else doesn’t even have a dime.
