I used to travel with the exact number of clothes I needed for a trip, plus 100 extra pieces, just in case. Haha. It was always a waste of my time, effort, energy and space because I should have known that it was never really about packing heaven and earth but packing just what was needed and what was actually going to be used.
I got tired of wasting so much time filling up a bag, using extra effort to move the bag around, and the confusion from trying to find something in the bag, and then bringing back home all those items I never used. The worst part of it all was my husband bragging about being right each time he said; “I said it! You were never going to use all that stuff.”

I had to learn how to travel light and efficiently which makes life a whole lot easier. This has helped me to be more productive on my trips and I get to enjoy them even better.

Here are a few packing tips in case you’d like to try

1. Use a travel planner or simply paper and pen to write down all you’d be needing for a trip in every category. Categories could be outfits, beauty, health, accessories, gadgets, books, snacks, etc.
2. Pack according to the number of days you are spending on your trip and you can add 1 or 2 extras just in case and try not to go overboard with the extras.
3. Consider each event or activity included your trip and pack items specifically for such events.

How to keep your suitcase/duffle bag organized

1. Fold each set of clothes together so that when you need a particular set, all you have to do is pull it out without messing with the rest. For instance, fold a top and a pair of jeans together into one.
2. I find that organizing clothes in files makes it easier for you to see everything in a glance and that way, you find what you need fast without messing up the whole bag.
3. Use packing cubes for each category of items and arrange the cubes in your suitcase or duffle bag. Organize the cubes in files in your duffle bag and when you need anything, you simply pull out the cube with items in that category.

Little Packing secrets

1. Maximize space by stuffing your shoes with items like socks, gloves, ties, glass cases and other little items that can fit in there without getting damaged.
2. Pack like-colors or a particular color scheme so that you can mix and match as much as you can. That way, you wouldn’t need to pack so much.
3. Start packing days ahead if you can. This would give you time to add and remove as needed.

Things I never travel without

There is a lot of essentials I never travel without like personal care and beauty care items, but here are a few items that are worth mentioning:

1. Medication: Strongly advisable especially if you are on prescription drugs.
2. Sewing kit: In case a button comes off or a zipper needs fixing.
3. Hand sanitizer: especially with kids.
4. Driver’s license: You never know when you’ll need to hit the wheels.
5. Debit/credit card: some places only accept swipes.
6. Cash: I like to mix the big bills with little bills. I never like to get stuck especially if I need to buy something or tip someone.
